Abstract

This article presents a non-religious and academic analysis of the struggle to establish an Islamic society during last few centuries.  This struggle is a modern political phenomenon that emerged as a reaction to 19th-century European colonialism and the failure of Arab nationalism. The intellectual foundations of this movement include Abul A'la Maududi's theory of divine sovereignty, Hasan al-Banna's reformist call, and Sayyid Qutb's revolutionary concept of jihad. Historical events like the 1967 Arab-Israeli War and the 1979 Iranian Revolution gave this struggle a new direction. Its practical forms include electoral politics, extensive social welfare work, and at times, armed struggle. However, these movements face challenges such as the separation of state and religion, internal ideological conflicts, and economic failures. The article concludes that this struggle is an ongoing tension between a utopian vision and the realities of the modern world, with an uncertain but evolving future.
